Default Not on Facebook? Older -- er, I mean wiser?

Hey everybody-

I'm doing a design class here at Stanford about social networks, particularly Facebook, and was hoping you guys might be able to help get some data. My team has been asked to focus on why people in the 25+ age group are or are not using Facebook.

If you're in that 25+ age bracket (I am! ), I would really appreciate it if you would help me by answering a few questions:

1) Have you joined Facebook?
2a) If you *have* joined Facebook, who convinced you to do so and why did you join?
2b) If you have *not* joined Facebook, have you ever been invited to join? Why did you choose not to join?
3) How old are you?
4) How much privacy do you expect when using Facebook? How much privacy would you like to have?
5) How do you use the web to keep in touch with your family? If you don't use the web, what do you use?
6) How do you find out about offline organizations and activities?

If that'* too many questions, responses to even a few would be great!

I really appreciate your help. You can post your replies on this thread or PM them to me.

Thanks!

Jeff

1) Have you joined Facebook? Yes
2a) If you *have* joined Facebook, who convinced you to do so and why did you join? So I could share pictures with friends and family
2b) If you have *not* joined Facebook, have you ever been invited to join? Why did you choose not to join?
3) How old are you? 36
4) How much privacy do you expect when using Facebook? How much privacy would you like to have? I expect some sort of privacy, like not showing my e-mail address to those people who are not my friends.
5) How do you use the web to keep in touch with your family? If you don't use the web, what do you use? A lot of my family are on Facebook, and then of course we use Yahoo messenger and e-mail.
6) How do you find out about offline organizations and activities? Through my work.

1. No
2b. Because I view facebook as not much different than MySpace, which is a pit of humanity and the root of many social problems amongst my friends and family.
3. 40
4. Privacy should be selectable to suit personal preferences.
5. Email and a family website.
6. Through my work and friends.

1. No
2b. Yes. One more site that I'll need to be active on and I don't have the time and don't see a benefit.
3. 29
4. Not necessarily a privacy issue. More of an issue that I don't find it a priority to use such networking sites. I see no value in having such a membership.
5. Email...or, would you believe it, a telephone?!
6. See #5.

1) Have you joined Facebook?

Yes
2a) If you *have* joined Facebook, who convinced you to do so and why did you join?
Went back to college and classmates invited me so I could see when study groups were meeting up as they used facebook events pages to announce them.

3) How old are you?
27 -26 when I signed up

4) How much privacy do you expect when using Facebook? How much privacy would you like to have?
I guess I don't expect a whole lot which is why I don't post much info on there, but I definitely notice it allows some more confidential info which I've seen others post publicly, which can be accessed by others in the same school. That info is home address, personal e-mail, and phone #.

5) How do you use the web to keep in touch with your family? If you don't use the web, what do you use?
I actually don't use the web to keep in contact with family for anything other than to forward online classifieds.

6) How do you find out about offline organizations and activities?
Phone calls and text'*.

1) Yes
2a) My roommate
2b) N/A
3) 21
4) I'm an education major so my entire profile and name cannot be searched. Everything is 100% private except to my friends.
5) I don't use it to keep in touch with family as they don't use it at all. I mainly use it to keep in touch with my friends and sometimes professors.
6) Various posters everywhere on campus

I expect no privacy, on facebook or anywhere else on the internet (except for my bank and credit card companies). And I'm okay with that.

I don't use the web to keep in contact with my family. We use face-to-face interaction. I do have friends out of state and we use email.
6) How do you find out about offline organizations and activities?

1) Have you joined Facebook? Yes

2a) If you *have* joined Facebook, who convinced you to do so and why did you join? I joined on my own, and I joined to find friends I lost touch with.

3) How old are you? 19, 20 on June 2nd.

4) How much privacy do you expect when using Facebook? How much privacy would you like to have? Average privacy. I didn't post my address, but my phone number is, along with a few other things.

5) How do you use the web to keep in touch with your family? If you don't use the web, what do you use? Email mostly, if not, the phone. Most of my family lives locally anyways, the others are in Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

6) How do you find out about offline organizations and activities? I check the newspaper all the time, people email me and tell me, or my young Democrats president calls me and notifies me.

EDIT - Oops, scratch mine. I'm not 25+.
