Engine and cosmetics. Like the SSEi and the SE, a Trans Am is a fancy Firebird

Exactly, for example 97-02 LS1 Firebirds/Z28'* had 310hp while Trans Ams/SS had 325hp. WS6 is just an appearance and suspension package.

Originally the T/A was the racer version, for Trans America Racing back in the late 60'*. The manufacturers had to make certain numbers of cars to compete with that setup.

F bodies got the LS1 in 98. The corvette had it solely in 97.

Spoiler, Hood Scoops, Quarter panel vents, body kit. Depends on what year Firebird/TransAm you are looking at as to which options are available.

FYI - There was the Firebird (SE), Firebird Formula (SSE), and TransAm (SSEi)....

I honestly don't know what the differences are...

However, from what I've read Steve and John are on the right track.
