New car input..
I'm looking at a few different cars to start test driving within the next month or so. I'm looking new, or CPO for the most part, unless I find a 1 owner jewel. Pretty much focused on the Hot Hatch segment...
Reqs:
My List as of now:
Most GM products at this price point don't really inspire me much, the new 08 Malibu might, but it'd have to be a big improvement in driving dynamics.
Anyone have any experience on these, or own one?

Honestly, from your small list, I would have to say the GTI all the way. The 6 speed is a little slower than the DSG Auto, but if you prefer the 6 speed, go with it. The aftermarket for them is growing quickly, and they are pretty quick. My dad'* friend has a MkV GTI with a chip, intake, and some other goodies, and it kicks ***.

If the S40 is on the list, why not look at the new C30 that Volvo has out. Seems to meet all the specs you're asking for:

ill give you my list, based on my "read" on the type of qualities you'd want in a car:
used altima vq35 (good choice btw)
cobalt ss/sc ('nicer' gm interior; good performer)
srt4 (sportier than cobalt; slightly better performing)
wrx (awd; fast and easy to make faster; good balance of go and turn)
evo (basically same as wrx)
lexus IS (dont know too much about them; the one i rode in had a great feel to it)
the 350ztt thats listed on here
f-body if straight line is #1 in your mind

I'm trying to get into this market (purely for interest only) because there is so much variety.
I'm confused about your requirements, when you say "hot hatch" I assume 2 door hatchback a la GTI kinda thing, but I read Altima and Fusion? The Altima does come in a 2 dr coupe, but for the money, I'd rather get a used G35 coupe or Nissan Z.
I can't deal with a Ford product, so IMO, I'm rulin out the Focus and Mazdaspeed3 (but I've heard it really motors).
If it was my 25K
Infinti G35
Lexus IS250 (cant do a 350 in that price range)
VW Golf GTI
Zias, have you looked at a 2000ish BMW 3 series coupe? Hot car man...hot car.

have you thought at all about a TDI VW at all? diesel is cheap and i hear that they can push some pretty big numbers with minimal mods, just something to consider
