just caught a professor "cheating"
Heres a good one for you.
I'm looking for some extra help on my homework by doing a google search. i come across a professors power point lecture from Stanford University and figure I'll check it out. after looking at it for a little while i realize it has a lot of similarities to what i saw in my class. well i pull up my profs lecture and the Stanford one side by side and they are 99% word for word (color and pics too!) the EXACT FRICKIN SAME THING!!!
ok, I'm pissed. I have to be held to some high *** academic honesty policy so why isn't he! isn't that plagiarism? he didn't give any credit to a source for the information...
So, to make this interisting, should i do anything about it?

ignore it. professors/educators are expected to not reinvent the wheel. if theres a better source for information, they are expected to use it. and why cite it to you? frankly, youre not an expert.
youre expected to uphold the academic honesty because the work is SUPPOSED to be yours -- his isnt.

I would maybe mention it to him that you saw a similar lecture on the internet and wondered if he had more sources for your "project". You never know, maybe he knows that professor in some way, or they worked together on something.

i guess my frustration lies in the fact that we (a large portion of the class) feel he isn't qualified to be teaching this class. he can't answer questions that aren't covered on the power point slides and this, to me anyhow, shows that he probably doesn't know the material. he is obviously using someone elses material to teach with, and although that may be fine i'd bet he couldn't make his own... I'm just a little blown away by how little he tried.

I voted for going to the Dean, FWIW. I also have a professor that doesn't know the material at all. Her tests are always full of errors and force us to make assumptions on things that should be specified. I am just trying to get through the class but when it comes time for evaluations...

Just did that tonight...
hopefully the right people read those things... i try to give as much info as possible and not just bash the prof though. (even though i feel he might deserve it sometimes)

if you go to the dean, that should be the thrust of your complaint. his powerpoints not being his is no more than evidence for your claim. but as for him not being qualified? obviously others disagree, as he met the requirements to teach. but that doesnt mean hes a good teacher.

unqualified? extremely unlikely
cheater? seriously doubt it.
