XP help... please...
XP pro, SP2, Dell Optiplex GX260, GeForce FX5500, 512MB DDR PC2100, Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 40GB.
There I was surfing the net, Looking up car parts. I started getting lots of popups then it rebooted all on its' own. When it came back to the login screen I click on my account and it hung for a second then acted like it was showing me my desktop, with the mouse being the only thing visible. I turned it off and tried again. Still a no go. I tried F8 into Safe Mode. The admin account shows up, but all three accounts show only the mouse (Safe Mode with those words in the corners).
I have no idea what went wrong. I don't think it'* the video card because I do get video out of it. I don't think its' ram because it boots. I think it'* some thing with the XP software. If I terminate svchost.exe the desktop shows up but looks all Win95ish.
