Shooting at my college
As some of you may know I just recently obtained my BS from NIU and I'm positive you all saw the news. I'd like to share my thoughts.
Its still settling in my mind what happened. DeKalb is the hub of DeKalb county and only 15 minutes south of me. If you go anywhere outside of town its miles of cornfields. So for this to happen in an area where you never ever EVER worry about life taking violence it feels wrong. Not that this sort of thing should happen anywhere ever, but here?
Good friends of mine go to NIU. I don't have strong ties with most of my previous instructors, but hell...I spent years there in what felt like the safest place on earth.
The real problem is that this is something we all will begin to learn to live with. Always the thought that it could happen and I don't like that. It keeps getting worse, never better.
Last spring in my English 400 class I remember when the Virginia Tech shooting happened and I recall fellow students being irate with how the faculty handled the situation by not warning students as much as they should have. I'm not going to pass judgment on that, but it got me thinking and I believe Northern is taking the proper precautions to keep students safe.
Know what sucks more than ever? This is going to leave a mark on NIU. It could kill enrollment, encourage people to move away, and just raise a dark cloud over the area. I like this area and I like the country. I also like the city, but I enjoy having the thought in the back of my mind that I grew up in the middle of nowhere with a tight community. The kind of place where everyone knows everyone else'* business.
It sucks that this happened and I'm not gonna let it change my love for the DeKalb area...but damnit wtf. Its fubar.
Go Huskies!
