I don't know. Maybe it'* because they volunteered to become Rangers, but not neccessarily to die.
Could be a "typo". Kinda hard to erase marble engravings...
Plus, not much in the military is "of your own accord". You're pretty much told what you will do....
You' have to ask the Ranger Association to know for sure...

Any special forces in the US military are volunteer. So those that have gone above the bar and beyond have done of thier own accord.
