its, if you're using it for CAD, you better go big on the video (openGL, big on vRam), and you can't get it non-integrated. It'* a laptop. By definition it'* integrated. You can't typically upgrade later. For CAD, you need the BEST graphics you can get (128 minimum), the biggest cache, and plan now to max out your RAM. If this means getting a 1mb chip now so you don't have to ditch a 512 later, than do it, or you lose the 512. Most laptops only have two slots. You also want at least a 400Mhz front side bus. This may not sound like much when compared to some desktop workstations, but it'* fast for a laptop. Processing all that data and video for CAD requires this speed.

Doing CAD on a notebook or laptop is not like doing it on a desktop workstation. The power isn't there until you get a Mobile Workstation (laptop built and certified for CAD). You're looking (ideally) for a laptop that carries an ISV Workstation Certification.

Yes, I work with Lasers. I design and build custom laser systems from the ground up for doing crazy crap nobody'* ever thought of. For Hewlett Packard. I'm currently in the 3rd design phase of a multi-laser system, and in phase 2 of the build. Big monster.

I do CAD exclusively on my laptop, AutoCAD 2006 works perfectly fine, but I do agree - it could be lots better. Gonna get a cheap cheap hookup and have 768MB of RAM in a bit, from 512...

Autocad is one thing. 2D isn't a resource hog.

From his list of work, I'm assuming he'* working in 3D like Jwikoff and I do.

ok thanks for the input. the cad program i use will be 3d. i know autocad 06 is like a 4 or 5 hundred $ prog. the one that i had to buy, is alot more than that, dont know the name of it right off hand cause i dont have it yet. ill get all of my books and my programs right after the first of the year.

as for ram i've already made sure that the one that i get will be upgradeable to 2 gb of ram, but as for what it comes with im not to worried about at this time. i can get ram chips for next to nothign. and btw newegg.com is expensive for anything.

you all have given me alota info on the system that im gonna build.

and the reason i ask if you where into lasers was just if i get stuck could i get ahold of ya and ask a few questions?

thanks agian.

Inspiron 6000 Intel® Pentium® M Processor 760 (2GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB) GREAT.

Operating System (Office software not included) Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 DITCH THE MEDIA CENTER, IT'* STEALING RESOURCES FROM YOUR SYSTEM. YOU NEED THEM.

Display 15.4 inch UltraSharp WSXGA+ LCD Panel YOU'LL NEED A SINGLE, PREFERABLY DUAL MONITORS TO WORK IN 3D CAD. YOU CAN USE THE LAPTOP AS A SUBMENU MONITOR, BUT YOU NEED A LARGE MONITOR FOR YOUR VIEWPORT. WHEN YOU GET YOUR SOFTWARE, TELL JOHN WIKOFF AND I WHAT IT IS.

Memory 1GB DDR SDRAM 2 Dimms THIS IS NICE IN DUAL 512'* FOR SPLITTING THE LOAD AND INCREASING THE RAM SPEED BUT IT SUCKS FOR UPGRADING. DO A 1GIG CHIP FOR NOW.

Video Card 128MB DDR ATI'* MOBILITY™ RADEON X300 PCI Express x16 Graphics
RADEON IS GOOD BUT LOOK AT ATI Mobility Fire GL T2 FOR cad WORK IF AVAILABLE

Hard Drive 60GB 5400rpmHard Drive 7200RPM IS A BATTERY HOG IN LAPTOPS. GOOD CHOICE.

Network Card Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem THIS IS STANDARD

Adobe Software Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 6.0 THIS IS A FREE DOWNLOAD

Combo/DVD+RW Drives 24X CD Burner/DVD Combo Drive GOOD

Wireless Networking Card Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps) INTEL PRO IS THE LATEST STANDARD. GOOD CHOICE.

Office Software (not included in Windows XP) No productivity suite- Corel WordPerfect word processor only DITCH WORDPERFECT AND DON'T PAY FOR THIS. GET AT LEAST A BOOTLEG COPY OF OFFICE IF YOU MUST.

Anti-Virus/Security Suite (Pre-installed) No Security Subscription

Battery 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery (53 WHr) YOUR WORKTIME WILL BE HALF THIS IN 3D CAD. PLAN ON CARRYING YOUR POWER SUPPLY

Hardware Warranty 1Yr Ltd Warranty, 1Yr Mail-In Service, and 1Yr HW Warranty Support

Dial-Up Internet Access 6 Months America Online Internet Access Included

Miscellaneous Award Winning Service & Support

Financial Software No QuickBooks package selected - includes limited use trial

Operating System Backup & Recovery PC Restore recovery system by Symantec

Dell Digital Entertainment Starter Entertainment Pack - Basic digital Music, Photo and Game experience

What you're doing here is trying to get a standard notebook to perform like a workstation. It'* not easy.

Any time. I work with all types of Class IIIB and IV lasers. From 192nm to 10.6um.

BTW, my comments in the reply above are in your quote, in caps.

Good buy IMO. For comparison, mine starts at $3k, but was upgraded to nearly $5k. But keep in mind it'* a dedicated (intended purpose) 3D design Mobile Workstation, and probably weighs almost twice what yours does.

I'll shoot a pic or two tomorrow compared to lilpooky'* laptop. It'* not fun to haul around airports. But it never lets me down, either. In school, you won't be working with complicated models. Later you will, but hopefully you'll have a good employer to set you up.
