K&N Oil Filters no longer made in USA and related issues
K&N Oil Filters were made in the USA, using the same insides as the Mobil 1 Oil Filters.
The K&N oil filters WERE made by Champion. Some industry info to pass along. UCI, who owns Champion Labs and Honeywell consumer products(Fram) were bought by a private company called The Rank group. This company merged the filter operations of Fram and Champion together and there were plant closings on the Fram end.
Since the merger/ buyout of Champion and Fram, K&N has contracted out the supply of their oil filters from Champion. The first vendor was in Mexico, then they moved to a Korean manufacturer, and now a Chinese manufacturer.
Reports are the internal quality of K&N oil filters are of very poor quality. I need the K&N oil filter for my S10; the bolt on the end of the filter is really beneficial. I have read numerous reports of the K&N oil filters made oversees leaking, particularly at the bolt.
What I am doing is continually looking for K&N oil filters (old stock) that were made in the USA for the S1-/ 4.3L. For any other application I am buying FRAM ULTRA, sold at Wal-Mart. Reports are the FRAM ULTRA is the best oil filter in the market, and is priced right at Wal-mart. I know FRAM has a reputation for crappy oil filters, it seems the merger of FRAM and Champion resulted in the FRAM ULTRA being a outstanding product.

Really, the only filter we can probably trust now is the paperless/reusable K&N oil filter. SS-1002 - K&N Performance Products, Oil Filter; Billet
Not cheap, but it will pay for itself in about 50 some oil changes and will probably never fail due to everything being stainless steel and aluminum.
On the original note, it really sucks that these companies are slacking on important parts such as oil filters. Do these CEO'* not realize they are putting the same parts in their Porsche?

CEOs don't care about anything but money. I normally use Delco or stp. They make all sorts of wrenches for tight spots. You can buy a lot of normal for the price of those k&n ones

Sounds like K&N will suffer eventually in sales when the news gets out & folks realize their filters are crapola. I wont buy K&N anymore.
Was using them in the 4x4 a few years back but have since switched to Napa Gold which I think are still made by Wix.
The contracting out of car parts to the lowest foreign bidder for corporate profits is creating an environment of unreliable products & recalls!
Remember the old days when companies actually cared about quality & reliability ?
Their name depended on it!
Zenith Used the Slogan "The Quality Goes in -Before the Name Goes On!"
Today it is... The Name Goes On -Before The Quality Goes IN !!!!
