looks like the left rear tire chunked itself, seen i happen the same way on an alchoal funny car at the divisional event in Earlville, IA earlier this september. but as to why the chassis spilt behind the mid plate is whay i can figure out, unless the upper slip joints failed.
Hope he get better though, he was one of the more funnier people ive met at national events

There have been a lot of chassis failing around the roll cage area lately. Mostly have not been catastrophic, mostly just bent chassis, but this is a PROBLEM. One or two are coincidence, but I think there have been at least 9 or 10 this year already.

We guess is one, or both of the upper slip joints on the chassis failed. If i recall correctly, the slip joints start/finish just behind the mid plate.

The problem is the frame design. If they added more framing around the area where the frame broke on John'* car, they wouldn't break like that. But they also wouldn't be able to do the 90-minute between run rebuilds that NHRA mandates, and the NHRA won't change that rule, now matter how many drivers are getting hurt. They have the same problem with the rail cars, where they break right in between the motor and driver'* cage, and just fold in half.
