There'* no replacement for displacement, right?
So I'm just playing with the idea, not really serious yet. As the saying goes, there'* no replacement for displacement.
I'm flopping with the idea of getting a 351 windsor out of a junkyard and rebuilding it using a rebuild kit. Just thinking about this becuase in the future if I ever get into racing my car a lot I'll need more cubes. A 302s maximum safe bore/stroke is a 347..whereas a 351W is 434.
A 351W will bolt right into my car, mount up to the tranny, run on the stock computer. 90% of the parts are interchangeable between 302s and 351Ws, inclduing the valvetrain, cam and all EFI components.. (the cam is if you get a 92+ roller 351W)
Dunno, just thinking about it. Not sure if its economical or feasible as a daily driver...but by the time I'd have the money to do this it probably would no longer be a daily driver.
What are your guys opinions? They matter becuase you're all GM fellas and fellettes.

hmm...i thought only the 5.0 302 was referred to as the windsor... I didn't know the 351 was a windsor also.
But I actually prefer the 302 because there are alot more aftermarket parts to the best of my knowlege.
But boy if only I had the money....I would love to have a mustang and get one of those 302s from Ford Racing. Those things are hot, but yeah, for overboring, 351 all the way!
And yeah, neither engine is the most economical, especially when you start mods on em. But then you have a car like 8-Ball haha, still a daily driver.
Modded 351 + Heavy Foot = Woah, wtf was that
and
= Woah, wtf happened to my gas gauge?

Here in the world of 3.8L... fuel gauges can drop fast as well.
vig.. it all depends on what you want to do with it. If you have a need for speed... save up.. and put lots of time and money into it. Take your time and then..as the project is almost ready to drop in, you pick up another car and then the stang is your toy instead of your daily driver.

351 sounds cool to me. I'm sure with all of the newere 5.0 Mustangs there are more parts for the 302, but there is plenty for the 351 which I'm sure can be built up to make more power. The 351 Windsor and Clevelands I've read are two of the best Ford engines ever made.

I have always been partial to the Cleveland series...351C/M and the 400M...but the W series is plenty stout. You can still keep it as a DD once the conversion is complete as the power curves will not be all that different...torque will definately be higher and will make the car a bit more squirelly with the current gears. Maybe chaging the rear gear will help with that.
As you said, this is very do-able in terms of simplicity and cost-effectiveness. JEGS and Summit Racing off out-of-box overhaul and upgrade kits for peanuts. You could *also* look into the 4.6 modular, but I think the fun per buck factor is with the 5.8.

The 351 is a fun motor to rebuild, and it can be bult for power.... I love the Ones I saw that came from the Ford Factory With a Holley Carb on it.... I giggled like a little school girl when I saw that the first time.... A Holley 4 bbl on a 351... The Guy had killed off the rod bearings... But being a truck towing and hualing all of the time... 250K miles was a good feat for it considering he never changed the oil... The inside of the motor was a mess... Went for a good rebuild as the oil pressure was tanking when it warmed up... Found the bearing material all over the bottom of the pan... We had the block cleaned at the Machine shop, and started with a clean build... Its been about 5 years and that guy is still driving that Truck with that very 351.... Damn thing ran good as hell too...
Um yeah if you have a few bucks to spend I'd get the 351.... Friend had a 351 RV thingy and never had a single issue with it( we changed the oil frequently ) Also had a F150 with the 302 and it too was troublefree, Sounded good with a Flowmaster

I've been thinking about doing what Bill said - just wait until it'* not my DD.
WJ - there are three types of 351..351W (windsor), 351C(cleveland), and 351M(modified). The 351W is a small block just like the 302 (and the 302 is also a windsor, both produced in the same plant), virtually exactly the same except for the 1" higher deck height. The 351C is a big block, and they can really scream. The 351M is a piece of junk in my opinion, they can't keep themselves oiled and can't make crap for power...lots of torque though. The 351W has just as much aftermarket as a 302. They will take all the same heads, cams, lifters, etc...
Sandrock - the only way I'd look into a modular motor is if it were a DOHC 32valve out of a cobra/mach one. But I wouldn't do it aynway, I'd opt for a 351 over it.
