Couple of mistakes i've seen so far. Most Big brand computers' mobo'* are made off seas by the same company or two, nearly all use standard parts that could be bought seperatly in some form in the aftermarket, except for the case, and some power wiring for the mobo. Brands are more important in terms of software they put on, and assistance they offer these days.
Good number of fans is dependant on case design, and heatsink design. Some cases are designed to use between 4-6 fans depending on size and how many u want up front/back.
My dell has 1 because of the windtunnel tech they use, and it works fine. I wouldn't buy another pre-fab for myself now, but the deals are GREAT if you don't need top of the line. A $350 PC will be 2x as fast as you need to do everything except fast video editing/rendering, and intensive 3d gaming. The fact is has an AGP Port lets you play games though, and upgrade your video card to the newest (big limiting factor for 3d games.)

btw, i think it was bill, but the 6 fans are correct positively and negatively positioned. 2 up front and 4 80'* in the rear. When i first built it, i just threw it together and ran it that way for a month cause i wanted to use it, but i later corrected it. I also have fan filters to keep out dust.
And that is funny if you think I do not know jackshit about computers, LMFAO....I own a cmoputer repair business from home.....Being your own boss is the way to go imho.

BTX (new mobo) moved things around for better connectivity, heat management, etc.

I have a Soundblaster Extigy sound card that I like a lot. Takes up desk space, but it doesn't add to case heat. Plus, you don't have to bring up the Windows volume control, which can be difficult when gaming and The Missus yells for you to "Turn that damned noise down". It has a nice little volume control ****
Graphics cards are "How nice a card can you afford". I have a G-Force 4 that I have yet to run across a game that it won't run, but the FX series cards have gotten pretty cheap.
Since you're in the cities area, I recommend checking out www.microcenter.com to shop for all of the above. They have pretty good prices, very easy return policy, and right off of Hwy 100 in St Louis Park so you don't have to wait for mail order....
