That is kind of silly, but yet it does make sense.
Since most SUV'* or crossovers will never go "off road, you really don't need 4 wheel drive.
As far as winters, I have had plenty of front wheel drives that got around just fine.
The Jeep thing, though, yeah, that is just weird.

BTW I drove a FWD CJ5 once. It had a locker in the transfer case, so when the rear U-joint broke....lets just say that it wasn't much trouble getting it back to the road, but driving home was an exercise in sheer TERROR.
