One more time...

I have the linux file on my desktop waiting in an ISO file
I downloaded both of your links for the virtual box. They are the same.
When I run the install of the Virtual Box, XP tells me not compatable.????

I would not do that either. The way I see it is you can either try another VM like the one from Microsoft called VirtualPC
or

You can download the windows installer for Ubuntu which will let you choose if you want to run windows or ubuntu when you boot. This will not touch the partitions on your HDD so I recommend this. Also, If it goes bad, you can uninstall ubuntu from within windows.

But would that protect my windows from a torrent riding virus or worm if not partitioned? I have alot at stake here with all I run from this computer. Really not feeling like rebuilding it all again. You have no idea the mess and work the last time I had to reformat the computer. Was hoping for an easy way to separate risks here.

I have the 32 bit XP and chose that when I did the Linux download. Just to wigged out to over ride the XP warning.
