the pic on the left side is called your avatar.
you can upload it by going in and editing your profile. the file size must be 80x80 pixels or less, and less than 16kb in size.

also, make sure you check this out..New Signature Requirements (effective a year ago)
make a sig up according to that, then follow the link that harofreak posted... enter the link in the signature section under the profile link
