Use outlook express as the client. I just looked and its got all my sent messages saved. I've got all three of my accounts on outlook (college, hotmail, and gmail) so i can check them all at once.

I agree that GMail is a better setup overall, but changing your address with however many contacts can be a real pain. So far, the Outlook Express suggestion is what I'd go with.

Gmail has a nice tutorial on how to export your Hotmail contacts into Gmail. I've done it.
But, I'm still using Hotmail in parallel. I can't seem to let go of the Hotmail account I created in March, 1997.
I agree with the Outlook advice. I run it that way on my home PC. Opening large contacts through Outlook will typically lock it up, however. Sending through Outlook is nice because you can turn on read receipts--something you can't do in web Hotmail.

Know the feeling and I've had both hotmaik and yahoo since 95. You can send out the notifacations but alot just dont remember to change, so I leave all 4 of mine intact.
