Just the laptop. Disable the LAN on the laptop. Turn it off. Reboot the modem, then the hub, then the desktop. MAke sure internet is working on the desktop. Now turn on laptop, let it boot fully, then enable LAN

If this still doesn't connect. disable LAN on laptop and run New Connection Wizard from Control Panel/Internet Connections. But once Desktop is connected, leave it on and alone

ONE MORE TIME

1) Disable LAN on Desktop
2)Turn off Desktop
3)Disable LAN on Laptop
4)Turn off Laptop
5)Turn off Hub
6)Turn off Modem
7)Turn on Modem
8 Turn on Hub
9) Enable LAN on Desktop. make sure your connected
10)Turn on Laptop
11)Enable LAN on Laptop
12)If Laptop doesn't connect, run New Connection Wizard from Control Panel/Network Connections

Print this out so you don't mix it up. If it doesn't work.... Take two aspirin and slam the laptop against the wall.

You can't do what you want to do with a hub. All a hub does is repeat all the traffic to all of its ports. Your Internet provider provides you with just 1 IP address and typically the first device that grabs it gets it. Thats why you get the IP conflict going on. You have 2 choices, either call your proider and get a second IP address to use (of course its not free) or get a cable router which has intelligence built in to share the single IP address.

If you don't need N class wireless, the the wrt54gl is an excellent class g router. Wireless class N is much faster than class G. When selecting a router, not all come with wired ports, be sure to select one that meets your needs.

This!
You cannot use a hub as a router.

There is a way to do it using a dedicated linux server, but I don't think that'* what you want. (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...hare.htm#Linux)

You HAVE to use a router to share a single internet connection.

My modem comes with 4 Ports Chris, doesn't that one accommodate more than one? What you need is more Wire.

Well, if you want to really cheap out... you could buy another ethernet card for the PC and enable Internet Connection Sharing in windows. Just run a line from that other card to the hub and from the hub to the laptop.

Only problem is that the PC would have to be on for the laptop to get a signal.

Or hell, I have a USB ethernet adapter around here somewhere!

Stay away from Internet Sharing. If your not gaming, go get the cheapest Wally router you can. I had a $39 Belkin that worked fine for years....... till Tommy blew it up....... trying to make it do..... Internet Sharing.
