its a 3.0. good trucks, mine treated me well for three years. only major issue was when the auto 4x4 hubs took a dump and i had to replace them with manual hubs.

My sister has a 93 XLT standard cab, 2.3L 5-speed manual. All I have to say, BULLET PROOF! Haven't had a single problem with it. She has 121k miles and we've just had to do a regular tune up. Pics:

The 3.0L is the Vulcan engine. It'* built to be a workhorse and is quite tough. Many people have put 200K+ miles on theirs. A common issue is the mashed potatoe auto tranny (A4LE), but the tranny and engine performance can be cleaned up with a BAMAchips Tuner if desired.
Performance can easily be bumped with an UDP for @ $80 (6-8hp), and CAI. Some top end improvement with a cat-back, but you lose a bit of low end. A "your choice" trade off. Real performance improvement can be had with a Whipple Charger for about $2500.
Check older models for throttle cable slack. It'* called the throttle cable mod and for 50 cents and 5-10 minutes, it can wake up your throttle response greatly. These were known for developing slack in the throttle cable.

Lash did any of those Rangers come with the SOHC 4.0? I drove a couple of Explorers a while back and was impressed with it... And it did 25-26 mpg too... was more impressed still with that milage...
And pretty much the same as Lash said on the Vulcan 3.0 .. it is a war horse... The only thing I have seen bad about the engine ( goes for most all engines in some respect ) the Vulcan 3.0 if ran hot seem to like to crack the heads... I can't say this enough Bill B, if your friend gets a 3.0 Ranger never ever get it too hot and that thing will run for a long long time to come... Little sucker has flat top pistons too.... And if memory serves a heart shaped combustion chamber

I did a clutch job on my dads Ranger 4 cylinder, took over two hours to bleed the damn clutch. It also had 8 spark plugs, for emissions.

True, true.
For the heat, most of us run 180* stats, just like on the 3800s. It keeps them from (notorious) pinging. And yes, flat-top heads w/heart-shaped CC.
