Default HELP: Computer wont load WIN XP Pro

Hey gurus...got another one for ya

My computer when going thru the start up sequence has a lil problem. Once the blue WELCOME screen comes up, my desktop shows up...everything seems to be going fine, then my icons and the WINDOWS startbar refuses to load up.

Not sure what the problem is...but I'm totally handcuffed here, I cant control anything in Window....do I need to do something in DOS (rather not if I can)

Of course I had to use the family compy to post this :?

Thanks for any help in advance

ctrl + alt + delete, task manager, new task [under applications tab], "explorer.exe" minus quotes.

try starting your computer in safe mode by pressing the F8 key just after your computer'* flash screen dissapears. (the make of your computer) This will bring up the configuration menu where you can select safe mode. See if your computer will start in this mode. If it does, then try and run your antivirus scanner and scan for viruses. Help this helps somewhat.

Don't use system restore, that has to be the worst feature in the world. It works for some, and blows up in others' faces. Turn it off, if you haven't already.

Uh, leave it on.

Give it a shot Jim if the other methods above don't work. I wouldn't give you bad advice.

Update:

I read somewhere that someone else had this problem and it was taking an hr to fully load window...even for a clean running 800 megahertz Athlon chip with 300MB of RAM its far to slow....(save the antiquated hardware comments please).

My next step is to get the OS re-installed and format.

Safe mode, tried it...took forever to get that going too.

*edit* Thanks Sol, working on it...would be nice to have you guys closer..lol, my tech support has his phone off.

K, a few things here Jim. LEAVE SYSTEM RESTORE ON. it may come in handy at one point in time, have had to use it before myself.

Second thing is that win XP does not have does on it, well not like the old versions of windows use to. It has a wanna be dos function but you cannot go into dos like before.

One other thing, did you install SP2, if you didn't yet DO NOT INSTALL IT. I have heard of too many problems with it and how much it slows down computers and creates more problems. If you did install it then that may be your problem.

Did you add any programs or hardware recently or just before the problem started??

Before you go and format and re-install you may want to save any information that you want to keep like pics or files. To do that if safe mode is not working ( and may not allow you to burn a cd anyhow to save the stuff) is to use another pc and put your current HD as a slave on that pc so you can at least go and grab the stuff before you zap the drive.

Update again

Safe mode gets stuck at SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\mup.sys

No idea

I installed McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005 last week on 2 computers in my house (with similar systems) no problems on the family comp, mine was fine til this morning....

I had installed SP2 a while ago and it cut off my ISP, so I uninstalled it. Not touching it, somehow I believe its unrelated.
