thanks all for the support! i'm here...as of 11pm last night. drove the trip solo in 29 hours. not bad. not bad at all. don't think the local boyz in blue would agree...but anyway, who'* counting? posting right now from sunny south phoenix. ben, i bought a different car...a 93 saturn sl2 just to get me by for now. it will pass the safety inspection...the other car, i left in michigan. someone there will try to sell it for me...i'm gonna flick it for $500 or less. anyway, i like the little saturn...and the a/c works very well. 
gotta get settled in at ASU...
