Default What do you think guys?

Ok heres the thing.

I was talking with Pinky about my old car. My Ciera Intl. that I left in Hawaii and he was asking me a buncha stuff about the options and stuff and he informed me of how rare it actually is. I believe he said about 550 units built? Anyways. I am thinking that I am a complete idiot for selling that car for what I did and that I think I still might have a chance to get it back.

I sold it on Dec 4th 2004 for only $700 in perfect condition, I was desparate to sell it because I was leaving on the 9th. I am willing to do just about anything to make money to get it back. I am having my friends on the NS of Oahu keep a lookout for the car and to leave a note on it for him to call me. I am going to see if he would even be willing to sell it. I am willing to pay upto 2k for it if there is no significant body damage to it now.

Once I make enough money I will fly to Hawaii, buy it, ship it to california and either drive it back to WI or leave it with one of my friends in Cali until I can make arrangements.

Now do you guys think this sounds doable or am I just wasting my time? I know most of you will say its stupid, but remember, I liked this car ALOT before I sold it, and now that I know it is what it is, I am desparate. I am going to be calling all the salvage yards on Oahu to see if they have it in their collection by chance.

I've been in your situation.

The car isn't worth 2k, let alone your airfare and shipping. Book it out.

Ok, its worth 1k-1200 and I sold it for 700 two years ago. Wow I'm dumb.

Ok, but beyond that, Its the rarity of the vehicle rather than the book value.

So take 1k plus maybe 400? Therefore I'm offering DOUBLE of what I sold it for.

Otherwise I don't even have to fly over there, I have a couple friends that can take care of it all. We'll see.

My SLE is perhaps the rarest car on this Forum. What'* it worth? Book value. There'* not a soul in the world that would pay more than book value for a modern-era FWD GM car.

Remember, just because something is rare doesn't make it valuable, there has to be some market for it. Sure, if it was a 1/550 Ferrari or even Corvette or Camaro, then there might be some market for it. But who'* going to pay more for a "rare" Cutlass, to most people, it'* no more desirable than any other Cutlass.

So you are all basically telling me not to waste my time preserving a rare car? I figured you guys would be this positive.

I never said anything about intentionally paying that much, I was only saying, that if he does not want to give it up for book...then i would have to resort to more money.

Ok, say I am only paying book. You're still telling me that its no more worth it to bring it over here than any OTHER '89 Cutlass Ciera?

If you feel the desire to bring it back, then that'* fine, it'* your money. It may not be rare to others but it'* rare to you and that'* what the most important thing is that you want to protect it, value it, and drive it. Just follow your heart and do what you think is the most important for you.

Don't confuse being pragmatic with being negative! You asked for opinions, you got them, don't get upset when they aren't complimentary to yours.

Even if you were paying BlueBook value, I would still not take the effort required to get from Hawaii to the continental US. Even if getting there doesn't cost you a penny (unlikely), you still have to factor in the costs of shipping on a container across the Pacific...this is NOT cheap, despite being within the US.

To answer your question, no, I do not believe this car is worth any more than another Cutlass Ciera. Well, I'll be fair here, what makes this one stand out...I'll hold my final opinion until I know.
