Alright, besides the fact its a ricer, its not mine. I need suggestions (besides taking it to the Junkyard)
A friend of mine came acrose an 87 Supra Turbo, as his project car. But, it sputters when getting on the throttle. It idles fine, and cruises fine, but acceleration is none existant. He just got it and hadn't had time to get down and dirty, but I am looking for some suggestions on the problem. He did the basic tuneup stuff (i.e. wires, plugs, filters, etc.). Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Hows the Head gasket? I'd check that, Fuel delivery, or a clogged cat first.

Yer, at 232hp and 254 lb-ft (and more power is very easily harnessed - the stock manual transmission can hold 400rwhp no problem, just get a decent clutch) and a 5-speed, that ain't a rice car. Why should he take it to the junkyard?

If you haven't had a blown head gasket, and there is any sort of miles on the car, you have it now. Or you will have it down the road. Factory head-bolt torque specs were 56lb-ft. Too low. Should you ever decide to do the HG, shave the block, head, metal gasket, ARP bolts, and ~72lb-ft, and you'll never have to touch it again. Hell, just shaving the block/head + new stock bolts + OEM gasket (I stress OEM!) 72lbs and you'll likely never have to touch it again.

As for the sputtering... turbo in good shape? Exhaust restrictions?

Oh... and http://www.supraforums.com , cocky bunch, many of the youngins there don't even own Supras (though they're not necessarily the FnF crowd), but you might be able to find something there.

take a look at that thread (and the TN Supra forum), fuel filter and TPS alignment might be a couple things on the list to check. The Supra in said thread is not stock, but eh, it could apply to you.

sniper, ive never never heard of or seen a cressida before, what are they all about?

This weekend we are going to check the exhaust for a blocked cat, along with checking the head gasket, O2 sensor, try to troubleshoot the coil pack, check the vacuum lines, and all the fuses again. I know he plans on doing a full gasket replace soon enough (before spring). Mike (guy who owns the car) thinks it might be the coil pack, which are expensive to replace. I am betting its a clogged cat converter. Will keep you guys posted. Any more ideas, keep them coming please.

Before it t'was discontinued in North America after 1992, it was a inline-six, (non-turbo) Supra-powered Grand Touring luxury sedan. Styling tends to blend in, but you should be able to tell them apart if you were looking at one, you can tell with its size (smaller than a Bonneville, much bigger than a Camry of its era), as well. IIRC, its price bracket (in its day) was not too far unlike the Bonneville'*. Japan-only versions of this car came in turbo form, fire-breathing, 280hp, blah blah. 1985-1988 North American iterations got a DOHC 2.8L, 12-valve (yes, DOHC and 2-valves per cylinder) inline six with 156hp/165lb-ft, same as the '82-'86 Supra. 1989-1992 cars got a 3.0L, 190hp/185lb-ft 24-valve motor.

^i had this car in my sig for a while... the Japan-only motor + manual tranny conversion is swapped into this one. Fast schtuff.



redssei01, is the Supra'* coolant level doing okay? Milky sludge under the oil cap? Bubbling noise at idle (this isn't necessarily indicative of the head gasket, but CAN be a symptom, my family'* Cress had this for years, it was just the heater core)

Coilpacks are going to be expensive. But expensive coil packs aren't limited to only Supras, us 3800 owners get owned too when it comes to this stuff (specifically people like me, with the Magnavox stuff).

Don't forget the 72lb-ft!
