Default Need Assistance! - 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis LS

Ok guys, my friend has a (look in subject line) and it has a couple problems....

my friend and i rebuilt the engine and that runs fine, but the thing is, it must have a sensor problem somewhere....it surges, and runs really rough when hot, like rocking the whole car back and forth when hot...also when you put it into gear it will immidiately die unless you manually keep the idle up. It also feels like it has NO POWER! My friend did a compression check and checked the fuel pressure and everything checks out...so yeah.

Please assist if you know something about Windsors and their posse.

Less torque than that. My bronco'* 302 is 270ftlb, with 185-205HP (depending on where u read it).

It'* about 240-250 torque range.

Anyhoo...

Similar problem on my wife'* 90 merc, when she had it. What did i do... what did it do... hm...

I think I did a complete tune up on it. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Also, we took off the throttle body, and plenum. Hadda fix the leaky plenum gasket. So i cleaned everything I removed.

It does have 8 separate fuel injectors, fired 4 at a time. there is no MAF sensor, it'* speed density. Check the plugs wires and distributor cap/rotor. Also check the timing. You can unplug the spout connector, start the engine, set the timing. I think the factory setting is 10deg BTDC. Shut it off, plug spout connector back in.

Could be dirty fuel injectors, or a weak fuel pump, or a bad fuel pressure regulator, clogged cat (eh, maybe not), clogged fuel filter, hole in the fuel line.

Just some idears.

Make sure you didn't install the distributor in 180 degrees out. it will run but only on 4 cylinders. The easiest way to find TDC is to pull the sparkplugs, put a wad of tinfoil in #1 and plug the hole (not too much), now turn the engine over via wrench on the cranknut until the foil blows out (it will sound like a small firecracker) then using a wood choptick or plastic straw feel down the hole while turning the crankshaft until you feel the piston is at its highest point. Now your at TDC and can reindex the distributor correctly.

good luck. I hope its that easy.
