Default Friend'* Alero (3400) caught fire today: Verdict is in

All of the plug wires burned real good.. didn't have a camera with me to take a picture. Battery looked pretty cooked too... looks as if the fire originated on the passenger side. All of the plastic near the passenger'* side of the firewall looked pretty toasty too. No pics... cameras not allowed on premesis. Car caught fire as he was pulling into the parking lot.

My guess would be electrical. Car was a '99 with 130,000 miles on it.

He'* thinking of replacing the car with a used GP GTP. Told him he can't go wrong with the 3800

taking notes. My girlfriend has a 2002 with the 3400.

Glad he was ok. Sounds like maybe the fuse box area started it? Did he have any aftermarket audio or alarms installed?

Interesting. I have family with Aleros. I will have to warn them.
Be curious to see if they are able to determine the cause.

Nothing aftermarket on the car... bone stock.

Waiting to hear what the cause was... power steering went out right before the fire, might be a clue. Hopefully he will know something tomorrow...

So the verdict is in. Mechanic said that "power steering line exploded, spewed fluid all over the mainfold, and that caused the fire".

So, what do you think? Is it plausible? Is it complete and utter bull?

When my wife gets home, I'll look to see if the PS line goes anywhere near the exhaust.

I agree with you there! Seems weird to me too... Didn't think it was all that flammable. Waiting for Wren to chime in and call BS... LOL
