Back when I was young and had roommates, some went good, some didn't. The ones that went well usually had house rules and only one (sensible)person whose name was on the apt and could evict the undesirables.
Now rooming with family is a different story.

congrats...
I'm moving into a brand new house in 2 weeks, with a previous roommate, his girlfriend, her brother and his friend.
Let me tell you, that I personally had better luck with my first college roommate, who was a complete stranger until we met the day we moved in, than with the 2 guys I have known my entire high school career. I am not sure why, but its true, it usually ends up like that.

First time in my life I had a roomate in college. It turned out that he was a drug dealer. After I reported him to police, he paid his bail (he must have been loaded to pay the kind of bail he had) then came back, smeared some kind of white **** on my computer, then wrote a curse on a picture of Jesus I had in the corner of my room then sprinkled blood on it.
The following semester, I bought out my room, and did the same for my upcoming final year. One roomate in my life is enough, never again will I bunk with a complete stranger. Ill sleep outside in the cold rain if I have to.

I've lived with friends, it just depends on their living habits. One was hard to get along with because he liked to be messy and drink a lot, the other was great and we were even better friends after that.

The benefit with moving in with a complete stranger vs an old friend is that with the stranger you will tend to respect each others space and personal belongings if you are a responsable adult who tends to having respects for strangers and what is theres, whereas with old friends you feel you have the right to their things as if they were your own "...since we know each other and they have problem with me...."
