Just a little heads up for you networking guys. Stay far far away from the Netgear MR814 wireless router if you want it to share an internet connection! Mine just crapped out on me, and now my brother'* is doing the same thing. It worked fine for a while, but slowly it would drop the itnernet connection more and more often. Now it is bad enough that I can't even communicate with the router with ping. If I ping it, it loses more than 45% of the packets I send it. I get "hardware error," "destination host unreachable", and "request timed out errors" constantly. I can't even log onto the router configuration file when the internet goes down on it. I have to reset the thing every 10 minutes or so which is annoying. I did a google search and this problem is very common.

the etremely wierd thing is I never lose file sharing through the router. odd ehh? It'* as if only the TCP/IP protocols are crapping out on these but they will still work fine as a switch, you just can't share the internet anymore. :( My next router will be a Linksys Wireless G router. Hopefully this will get me up and running again!

yeah, i had the same problem with my dlink. went to the base linksys b router. Worked fine since.. I wish i had g, i transfer so many 5 gb files, its not even funny how long I have to wait.

I stick with Linksys mainly because its Cisco'* cheaper brand and Cisco is like the Microsoft of networking. I SUBMIT MYSELF TO MONOPOLIES!

Seriously though, I've never bought anything but Linksys so I can't give you my review on Netgear. However some companies just put out bad batches, try to keep that in mind.

I know two people with the big one like mine (v1) , and 2 with the smaller one (V2) both have worked better then any router anyone else has bought i know. I've had mine for 1 1/2 years now. Have you tried updating it? Maybe it is a bad batch or supply in your area?


My Netgear MR814 (version 1) has worked flawlessly under crazy traffic. Being on a dorm network with 2000 people there was a lot of traffic, and time to time people tried stuff and flooded it. Any computer with a firewall was basically slowed to a halt as it tried to process it. My router kept me going. For the last school year it was on 24/7. Neighbors M$ one just sat there and quit. I've even moved mine about 10 times.

Side note neighbor bought D link before M$, the WAN port was pushed into the unit...

Yeah I've been having router problems too. The main reason why i don't come on the internet much anymore, and am forced to use a iCrap through the school. AIM is bloody murder on the receiver which is less than 10 feet from the router.

That would be the ISP'* wireless router. They decided instead of using the ethernet jacks wired into every room, to just broadcast wifi.... So i can't use my router anymore.

WTF!? Your ISP is supposed to have a permanent connection to the Internet backbone and have that hard wired, not routered to each receiver. Your ISP is more retarded than my car. (the corsica)

They have a permanent connection. But instead of running it to each room wired, they broadcast it wirelessly. Which sux. I hate dynamic IPs.
