I bought a house...well a farm I guess...and it has a well. The water is hard but no big deal there. I replaced the hot water heater because the existing one was about to go. Now my hot water stinks. From what I can find on the net I have sulfer reducing bacteria in the hot water heater causing the formation of H2S gas. No health problem but it sure stinks. Nothing like taking a shower or washing clothes with water that smells like rotten eggs. Only way to get rid of them is to put some bleach in the heater and flush them out or crank up the temp on the tank to kill them and then flush it out. Then just hope they don't come back for a while. Anyone else ever delt with this or have bad water problems?

I'm in Florida, and I live on the outskirts( County Not City ) so there is no city water service here....
I'm on a well... Its actually a shallow well as the water table here on the East coast of FL is diffrent than the center of Florida...
We can only go down about 50-60 ft... Anything further than that will be salt water..
But anyhow.... I too found that my water was very hard... Other than that it was ok( as good a city water ).... But I had a rotten egg smell... I could flush the water heater, and it would be ok for a couple of days and then the rotten egg smell would be back.... at the time the only thing I had was a sand filter... Later I decided on a water softener and 2 more wholehouse filters to keep the water clean...
I have never had the sulfer smell return... I keep the brine tank full of salt all of the time to keep the soft water going... I also replace all of my filter( 3 totall ) once a month... Even my clothes stay white

We had this same issue at the family cottage. The cottage is also on a private well.
The smell is coming from the hot water tank. A plumber friend fixed it for us. Apparently, there'* a filter "pipe" that'* inside the hot water tank. He removed it and it STUNK. Didn't put it back in and the smell has never returned. I'll call my brother at lunch. He'll know the name of the pipe and how to remove it....

And yes I even use the Ice from the fridge in my drinks

I got a softener a couple days ago, still nedd to hook it up. Maybe it will help with the smell but I am not counting on it. I haven't seen any softeners that calim it so I was pretty much figuring I'd have to do something else too.

We had a water softener and whole house filter installed to help combat that white crust that formed after the water dried. Seemed to do the trick.

Don't count on it. You don't need a softner. This is a common issue with private wells.
The family cottage is up the road from Beaverton, in Gladwin.
I'm still waiting to hear back from my bro so I can get you more info on that filter tube inside the hot water tank. And, that hot water tank was brand new too. This started only months after we installed the new tank.
