What are your goals? Loose weight, get bigger muscles faster, or get strength and endurance? Also, what kind of equipment do you have available to you, when can you use it (time of day for xxx long), and how is your diet?

I'm by no means an expert as weight training, but I am about to start my own training this week (new years res ) and I have done some looking into this and have also gotten a bunch of new equipment to do this. I may be able to help some, but am interested in what I don't know as well.

If you want to build muscles fast go for heavy lifting with low reps. If you are looking to tone then use moderate weight with higher reps. When you lift only do one set of muscles in a day; ie upper body. Then do legs the next. Don't lift with the same muscle group every day or else you will "plateau", which means you will stop gaining strength and maybe even start to loose. This is because when you work the same muscles every day they will not have time to rebuild properly. If you feel as though you are not getting anywhere, then take 4 or so days off to let you're muscles rest. Then hit the weights hard and you may notice a slight gain, but more than anything you will probably notice a dirastic gain after a couple weeks of hard lifting after a break. Never drink soda before lifting, it kills you're strength for some reason. Also, as you probably know don't lift on an empty stomach but don't lift right after eating either.

I've found that fast results, if you can achieve them, can be temporary. Losing weight and having a buff body must become a way of life, and for most, it means a lifestyle change.

Diet and exercise are the key, but you already knew that.

We need to know where you're at, and where you're trying to go.

Thats the truth. I'd see the same people in the weight room everyday bustin their tails off for 4 hours each day, and after a year they only gained a little stength.

Pushups, you get a full body workout, can do them anywhere, and it'* free. Try it for a month and see what happens.
