Need snow tires! This last storm I realized more and more how much of a difference they make. The moment you spin the wheel, they dig through snow like they're made of razor blades and you get right down to the pavement. Extremely good cornering, stopping, and acceleration. With snow tires, you can accelerate, corner, and stop better than any all wheel drive car on the road with all season tires. I would have been able to get down our 500 foot driveway without a problem were it not for the fact that the moment I accelerated and the car dug down through the snow, I hit ice and couldn't go anywhere.

I spent the money and had a decent set of tires put on the SSEi before winter, then had my little thanksgiving incident and now it'* sitting in the shed.

The tires on the SLE did pretty good IMO. I was much better off than a lot of people I saw out there. Although I would have loved to have had some real snow tires.

I look at it this way. You can drop right around a grand on a good set of snows. Plus, to do it right you need another set of wheels. Or you can take that grand and buy a older 4x4 and park your nice car. My truck is the best grand I ever spent on my car.

Good point... Although not everyone has the parking space for an old 4x4 or the space to maintain it :P

If I had a garage and some extra parking I'd definitely pick up a 4x4 winter beater.

Can't begin to tell you how many people there are out here with that flawed mentality. 4x4 doesn't replace snow tires, nor are snow tires $1000. I paid $460 for mine installed on 16" rims, and I paid $125 for the rims, 1996 Grand Prix 5 spokes. The fact is that a 4x4 will only get you going and help prevent you from getting stuck. Your ability to slow down or turn will be determined solely by your tires. AWD in some cars might help direct power to the wheels that have more traction so you don't spin out as easily, but all season (or 3 season rather) tires are still all season tires and whether or not you have 4x4 when you're taking that turn or applying the brake will make absolutely no difference. When you get a 60mph gust of wind that blows against your car, 4x4 or not you're going to be pushed into the ditch. With snow tires, that isn't the case.

What Blizzaks exactly? I pulled an AWD Escape out of a 2 foot deep embankment about 4 feet. I have pictures to prove it. I was in half a foot of snow towing him out with a 25,000lb truck strap and those blizzaks chewed through the snow and got me down to the grass instantly where I could get some better traction. Nobody passed me on my trip to California last month and we had some really bad weather. We counted 43 cars and trucks stranded in ditches or the center divider in Nebraska alone, and I slid not so much as once. At one point a truck had been blown partially into my lane and I merged onto the shoulder that had not been plowed over with 6-8" of snow, at 60mph, and did not lose control for a second. Keep in mind that these tires have changed and evolved, and they have different series for different tire sizes. I used the WS70'* and they are not the same as the WS60'* or the LM-18'* even though they still carry the same Blizzak label.

As for ice traction, they outperform M/* rated all season tires by a very large margin (1/2-2/3) the stopping distance when ABS is engaged.

Let me go another step further. A buddy of mine from w-body has the same tires

I wouldn't have been able to walk up it.

I stopped halfway up.(Am I crazy!?) I goosed it, and NOT EVEN A SPIN!!! Made it right up. I couldn't believe it. So I did it again. Except this time, I was rolling backwards! It slipped just a **** hair, then the tires turned into the HULK AND DOMINATED THE HILL!!!!!!!

These tires PWN!!!!!

This season'* Blizzak WS70'* are nothing short of amazing and if you have so much as an ounce of doubt, I invite you to drive my car in a snowstorm or on an icy road.
