Default 97ish 5 series stuck in park

My girl'* aunt'* beemer is stuck in park.
It turns on fine and there wasn't any abnormal behavior before this either.
I searched a bunch on bimmerforums.com but couldn't find anything.
I did find this through google though:
http://experts.about.com/q/BMW-772/G...t-problems.htm
Basically says the shifter calbe may be loose.

Any other thoughts or ideas?
Any input is appreciated.

Any pressure on it, like on a hill, or anything that would put excess pressure on the parking pawl?

Not sure on the brake lights but the steering wheel was jiggled and brake hit.
