I might be wrong, but the way I always defined it is that a moonroof is glass. You can see through. A sunroof isn't.

Isn't a sunroof a peice of glass in the roof that tilts up or is removable? A moonroof slides back into the roof? an Astroroof is one that can do both. I think that'* how it goes anyways.

As far as I know

Sunroof: Vent only, rear pops out and its operated with a mechanical closer that locks when in the open position. Tinted glass.

Moonroof: Retracts, solid metal cover painted to match

Astroroof: Does it all, tinted glass, vents, retracts.

Could be wrong tho :?

At night it'* a moonroof, during the day it'* a sunroof.
"Astroroof" is the covering over the Jetson'* dog'* house.

Apparently google wasn't working earlier

"sunroof" is the term originally used to describe a metal panel that would only allow light or air in when opened. A "moonroof," on the other hand, is a glass panel that can allow light in even when it is closed (provided, of course, you slide back that nifty fabric-covered panel to expose the glass).

True sunroofs, those made just of metal, appear to have gone the way of 8-tracks in automobiles, and these days, most "sunroofs" are really "moonroofs" -- panels of tempered glass, usually tinted, that tilt up to allow a flow of air, or slide back into the roof entirely, giving the car occupants a brief but tantalizing glimpse of life in a convertible.

That sounds about right....

To me, sunroofs only tilt up (and sometimes can be manually removed)... and moonroofs fully retract...
