Default "911" can I help you.

Ida Mae passed away and Bubba called 911.

The 911 operator told Bubba that she would send someone out right away.

“Where do you live?” asked the operator.

Bubba replied, “At the end of Eucalyptus Drive.”

The operator asked, “Can you spell that for me?”

After a long pause, Bubba said, “How ’bout I drag her over to Oak Street and you pick her up there?”

You would be surprised how often people call and have NO clue where they live or where they are at. This is especially problematic when calling from a cell phone. I had to chuckle because it'* just so true to life some days

To where? Our enhanced 9-1-1 centre can only determine the specific tower the phone hit when the call was made. Cell phone towers cover A LOT of area when you're trying to locate an emergency.

depends on the cell phone i guess. mine has GPS there is an option to turn it off, but it notes that the GPS information will still be available to emergency services.

can't they also triangulate using multiple towers?

There are no cell phone providers in Alberta (and likely other provinces) that currently support this technology. I know exactly what you are referring to, but the closest we have the ability to do is triangulate the approximate position based on information from towers, if they happen to hit three. This in itself can't be done by the 9-1-1 centre, only the cell phone provider. My current EMS partner has worked in a 9-1-1 centre for the past 15 years (until about two months ago) and tells of instances where the phone company took prolonged times determining the triangulated position. Unfortunately, we seem to lag the US significantly in implementing much of this technology. I would certainly be curious to know how many US centres actually have this information available.

These are the cellular 9-1-1 rules. http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts...ss911srvc.html Phase II has been around here for a couple of years, but as you can see, it can be as far off the mark as 300 meters. That'* a lot in a crowded city.
