DAMN Hans. Thats one messed up situation. Glad to hear that you're still alive though. A whole lot more of that trauma in such close proximity to your brain could have yielded a much more catastrophic result. It really is awful how this kind of thing happens to such a good person as yourself. Really is terrible.
Well, heal up soon man, best of luck for not encountering anymore ********* like that. I hope that guy gets attempted murder for that one. Thats the MINIMUM of what he should be facing.

Make sure you show up for every court date. I don't know about Idaho, but Ohio has a victim notification law that requires victims to be notified before a prisoner goes before the parole board. Show up then, pictures in hand, and testify to pain and suffering. It'll be a wait, sounds like he'll be going for a while, but maybe you can get him a little more. Also, look into filing a civil suit. Take him for every penny you can get.

Hope you get better, sounds like it'* time to look into some sort of +20 Protection from Everything Armor though.
