Not all phones from a provider use the same broadcast frequency, this means the coverage area for a certain phone is less than what the coverage maps say.

I have Nextel, and so far I've been pleased with the coverage. Though it doesnt have analog service, I'd rather not have service than have really crappy signal.

And I would believe that modifying your phone would be against some FCC regulations.
