Also, if you think about it, and are nerdy enough to remember the original origins, they never started out looking like earth vehicles. They scanned their surroundings on arrival, and adapted their forms to what they found. So, all they had to do was decide it was time for a new look, and do a rescan....
But, for marketing sake, their gonna use the vehicles that get them the most product placement funds...

Well, since we are on the subject...let'*, uh, name the "races", if you can remember them.
Autobot
Decepticon
Constructicons
Dinobots
Junkions
I know there are more

for anyone who has seen the robot designs of the new transformers, is anyone else bothered by the fact that they look frail and skeletal? they got all their hydraulics and components exposed, no armor at all, the G1 transformers all had tough beefy robot modes they were solid and armored, the movie ones look like a well placed rock throw could immobilize them, you dont see engine running without valve covers, you dont see animals running aorund with their vital organs hanging out, tanks are armored for a reason, i will sitll see the movie and im sure it will kick *** but its just something that bothered me

I think what you are referring to is story boards ?
remember the images (most of them on the internet) are just guesses
heres another look at optimus
so im waiting for the official movie. to make any determinations.

You have to realize too, that cartoon animators aren't bound to logic and the intricacies of robotics like a live-action movie would be. Case in point: the size issue G1 Megatron has when he goes from normal to transformed modes. C'mon...that is one helluva shape shift. So when it comes to live action, big-screen, and modern day computer animation, of course the animators have to make it believeable. Meaning both G1 Megatron and Soundwave won't work in this movie since the size difference between robot and "disguise" modes are just too great. This is also the reason why the creators made Optimus into a long-nose tractor. It'* just easier and more believeable to fit more robot parts in a frame like that.
BUT, that does not explain the COE pictured above. Interesting.
