Big John Kerry
Friends,
Just want to ask you guys all to consider supporting John Kerry for President. My fiance has type 1 diabetes, and President Bush is blocking potentially life saving stem cell research for her. Check out this 30 second video for more info: http://www.johnkerry.com/video/10070...ox_wmv_dsl.wmv
Anybody considering voting for W, give Kerry a second look.
-Ryan

correct me if i'm wrong here guys...
stem cell research has to do with growing healthy cells based on a person'* DNA makeup to replace bad or dysfuctional cells in their body. there is a large amount of controversy surrounding it because forms of the procedure would involve "growing" fetuses and harvesting their healthy cells. the issue is obvious here: would we be playing God and growing humans to then kill them and use their bodies? that'* up to you to decide at the polls...
by the way, no matter who you are and what you believe, PLEASE VOTE THIS NOVEMBER!

Stem Cells
Stem cell research has NOTHING to do with growing humans and using them for body parts. I would never support such a thing and neither would John Kerry.
Stem cell'* are the earliest cell'* in the development of a fetus. They can grow into anything. So, my fiance has diabetes and she doesn't have cells that create insulin. If scientists get proper funding, they can learn how to manipulate stem cells into cells that produce insulin and inject them into her body.
The stem cell'* that John Kerry proposes to use are left over from fertilization treatments. They are currently being incinerated. No extra stem cells would be created, we would just use the ones currently left over from fertilization techniques to try to cure debilitating diseases.
It makes a lot of sense and could lead to cures for millions of americans, but the President is blocking it because of extreme right wing ideology. Watch that video i linked to, it is very powerful.

sorry if i misconstrued that. i didn't know the specifics of kerry'* plan. but just to clarify, i didn't mean that body parts would be used, i.e. arms, legs, organs, etc. the reality is that it would mean creating life (depending on what you consider to be a living thing) and using it to treat illness

Posting jokes about one candidate or other is one thing, but publicly asking people how/why they vote, or asking them to vote for one candidate or the other can get sticky. Tread lightly here. We try our best to keep the political discussions cool.
The big picture of stem cell research is complicated, and not as simple as you have presented it here. DNA, Stem Cells and Cloning are all very closely related. I personally oppose it.

you put that very well, will. i'm not even sure i know all the specifics. the question boils down to the same issue as with abortion: are potential humans being destroyed? heck, the issue goes even further back to whether or not in vitro is ethical. strangelove, i do not mean to devalue the life of your fiance in any way, shape, or form. but making a personal plea like yours presents the logical fallacy of a choice. if we vote for kerry, we're voting for your fiance'* happiness. if we vote for bush, we're voting against you guys. you're putting us in a pickle. the harsh reality of the situation is there is a bigger picture that goes beyond any of our personal lives. without getting any more specific than this, i truly and honestly wish you guys the best of luck in marriage. whatever happens in the election my hope is that you'll make the very most of your years in love with each other.
