Alien. Far and away the best horror movie of all time. Yes, most people consider it to be sci-fi. From the chest-burster scene to "Here Kitty Kitty....", it'* all good. It'* the craftsmanship, the way they never show the creature until the end, the breathing sound while Ripley is in the computer room (that is REALLY subtle, I didn't catch on until about the third time I watched it), the way Ian Holm FREAKS THE HELL OUT.....It'* good all the way through.
For the psychological horror fans, try to find a copy of "The Audition." It'* a Japanese flick, and one I can just about GUARANTEE will not be copied by Hollywood any time soon. VERY disturbing movie......

Its what made me a nail biter (LOL) and I still vividly rememer watching it for the first time.
Other movies I like
The Omen (the original. I have the remake but have yet to watch it)
Phantasm (gotcha now boy!)
Boogums (only because of the great 'jump' scene.)
Lets Scare Jessica to Death
The People Under the Stairs
Night Gallery
and the first Horror flick I can recall watching and being scared: Don't be Afraid of the Dark
