Default Radio Scanners

Anyone know of some good resources for a Pro-95 Scanner from Radioshack? This instruction booklet I got is crappers. Any tips or tricks as well would be helpful on programming and sucessfully searching.

Is it possible to pick up radio transmissions that are 15 miles away, but the radios are only a 3-5 mile range im trying to pick up?

I think the range thing is pretty dependant upon your antenna (sp?)

radioreference.com is a pretty good site for freq'* and stuff. Other than that I know nothing.
