Yea, Apple has their own processors and architecture.
But I'll tell ya one thing, they are doing a damn good job. The G5 is one of the fastest destkops on the planet right now.
But yes, expensive.

Well I might be one of the only members who has a MAC. But that'* because I'm a graphic artist (self- employed right now ) and Macs are pretty standard for that chit. You can find a fairly new (not newest) iMac for prob. $899...but go G4, or the new NEW iMac, or G5 and ya...they're friggin expensive...but they're good computers..and they look nice.
And their 23" LCD monitors are soooooooo nice. (Also $1200) My last professor has two My brother gave me his old 98/99 iMac for $100 which isn't bad considering the 512MB memory and I have a ton of friggin programs.
But you can't build your own which kinda sucks. I'm considering building my own PC..but I don't hate Macs that much

WOO! Graphix Artistz OWNZ! *chocolate bar for fellow artist*
I have a Mac too, albeit a rather strange one. It'* basically made out of parts. Only the keyboard and outer casing are original. It'* a good computer though. Never had any really serious problems from it. Nothing I couldn't fix by reinstalling the OS software anyway.
Macs are essential for artsy people. They're right-brained computers. I have all kinds of art crud (camera, scanner, photo printer, tablet) hooked up to it and it never spazzes out.
I'm self-employed too, but not making much money. Der? I suck.

I think they have their ups and downs, but I don't have a reason to switch to one. I can do all the photo/video work i need on a wintel machine, and much more. No TV tuners for MAC, no Pocket PCs really work with it (well i don't own one anymore) and all my classes etc use Microsoft office. All the old things about windows being bad are pretty much gone now though, XP was a huge thing, and it will really get better with longhorn and the new winFS file system.
