Trip to Copper Harbor, MI - 60 pics within
My wife and I went to Copper Harbor, MI for our 5 year anniversary. For those of you not familiar with Copper Harbor, it'* the northern-most point in the northern penninsula of MIchigan. It juts in Lake Superior 55 miles from the mainland. Back in the mid 1800s the area was very rich in copper which resulted in a "copper rush". That ceased in the early 1900s. Now it'* a semi-secretive tourist destination. Only a few hundred residents remain in the town year round. And, since it'* so far north, tourism is limited compared to what you'd find in most northern towns. Anyway..here goes...
We took 525 pics, but these are my favorite 60 or so. 1,450 miles in 4 days!

We took a tour of the Quincy Copper Mine. It ceased production in the mid 1940s. However, the highlight is this 17 ton piece of copper that was recovered in Eagle Harbor (15 miles south of Copper Harbor) in 2001:

And, finally, of all people, Oprah Winfrey has a hide out in Copper Harbor. Here'* the enterance to her gated "compound"

I'm gonna be living in Houghton (Mich Tech) in a year so I'll be able to take in the beauty.
Did you take I-75 up or US-23? because if you took 23 to the bridge you drove right through Alpena, and you could've stopped and said Hi :P
