It was only $15 and I got it more for OBD scanning than a primary computer so I guess it'll do the job.

It works fantastic for a half hour, fair for another half and very annoying from then on. Reboot and I have another hour of flawless usage. Bizzare.

I think I'll try reloading the OS. I guess it can't hurt anything.

I'd seriously consider moving to XP on it if you can.

Almost sounds like something is slowly heating up to me. The only OS related thing I could thing of would be the paging file filling up and bogging down the processing, but that just don't feel right...

Interesting description. Many times after the mouse or cursor pause, I hear what sounds like HD activity. Like something is writing to the drive. Is this what you are talking about?

Would XP be more beneficial?

The page file is basically a file on your hard drive Windows uses to make virtual memory. You can adjust this manually, but not sure you want to. I don't know that switching to XP will help, but if you can track down a larger faster hard drive, it would. Not an easy task for an old laptop.

How fast is the system? Chances are you will kill it with XP. If the sticker says "Designed for 2k, NT 4, and 98" It was loaded with 2k. Every notebook I have seen, had 2k with one of those stickers [3-5 total]. Just put 2k on, it'll probably fix all your problems

It'* a 400Mhz Pentium II processer

Is there a freeware utility available that can tell me what is going on in real-time? I'm going to try the Windows resource meter and see if that can pinpiont the problem. I'm not sure if that is the right program to diagnose.

I used to specialize in the c class lats. got a 366mhz/256 one that someone dropped in a parking lot right now...sorta needs a screen.

these are ok but CPX with 512mb of ram and a 5200rpm hdd will be allright for net surfing. Probably the best deal right now out there for a basic well built laptop.

btw 2k is FAR BETTER than XP on an older system like that being 5 years old at least.

XP will just hog your resources with the xtra useless addons. I personally have tried every sp of xp and still end up throwing 2k on my main system.

my others have the knoppix

2k Pro = XP Pro

XP pro will have updated drivers already for it and might make it run better, once you set it up right (remove pretties, adjust page file size etc). Can you force a certain page file size for that?
