Honestly, I think you do have the right to be miffed off at the general public because you are an security officer, not a guard....BUT with that said, I, for one, had no idea there was a difference. Most people probably don't. So, when call you a guard, they have no idea that they could possible offend you. People aren't trying to be demeaning, they are just going with a general term...so, try to remember, that people aren't trying to offend you...most of us don't know.

I usually dont give people to hard of a time when they call me a guard, I just explain the difference to them. My co worker gets realy upset and starts acting like a drill sergeant and stuff when he'* called a guard, even told our boss the next time someone calls him a guard he is beating there a$$. I dont quite get that upset.
There is one instance that I think highly trained persons are called guards, and thats the brinks armored car guards. I think they refer to themselves as guards, that the only that I know of. The rest of the highly trained and certified security persons are insistant on being called officers, as I am. On the other hand I have talked to entry level guards with no training and barely a high school diploma get upset by being called guards, technically in this profession they have to earn the right to be called officer through training and experience, but I have respect for everyone so I call them what they want.
One final note: we are highly under credited. We risk our lives every day such as police officer. We protect life and property and usually do it without complaint. We would take a bullet for someone as a cop would, we are also law enforcement. We do everything for citizens that cops do, we only lack the power of arest. Its our job to serve and protect. Granted our juristiction is only the property in which we work, but we are to protect everyone on our property as the police are to protect our communities. Alot of people dont realize that. We are thought to be just guards are looked down on cause we are not cops, yet we do what the cops do. Go figure.

try not to get offended. I know you have worked hard to achieve your accomplishments. I work for an insurance agent and am fully licensed in my state and people call me a secretary all the time. I know a lot more than the actual "agent" knows but people don't realize that I am a licensed agent myself. You just have to take it with a grain of salt.

It sounds kinda like if someone called me a cook, or someone who works at a fast food place, when it'* not really.

Personally I don't see the difference between the two. I don't mean this disrespectfully but to the average person they look and act like the same person.
I work at a company where we have security personal on duty 24/7. The only "tools" these people have to work with are master keys and cell phones. They don't get any sort of defense weapon, not even a knight stick. Some of the security personal are fresh out of high school while others seem to be more seasoned at the position, but either way they do the same job (at least at our company). Even if the security personal at my company have all this extensive training, it isn't being put to use.
Like I said, I don't mean any disrespect to you or your job. In fact my sister just became a security person for a fairly large security company in our area. I get mislabeled myself all the time at my job of a desktop support technician. Everyone calls me a helpdesk tetchy, computer geek, or some other name. It doesn't bother me at all because I know that they just don't know the difference. On the same note though, if someone who knows better (such as a co-worker) mislabels me I will correct him or her.
I guess what I am getting at is I just can't tell the difference. I can't tell if a teacher has a master’* degree or is fresh out of community college. I also can't tell the difference between a lieutenant major and a corporal, but I know there is a difference that one has earned over the other. Not everyone knows everything about every job. I would just take it with a grain of salt because they probably don't know any better.

Personally I didn't know there was a difference either. If I had someone jump down my throat about saying that I would have an even elss opinion of them and even less respect.
I have been mislabeled many times in my previous jobs but I didn't really care cause I knew the people didn't know any better. I was an Asst Manager in retail for quite a while and people used ot think I was just a regualr worker and never beleived anything I said. But when they got the same answer from the other 2 people they asked I used to laugh.
