50% of my friends are unemployed.
Its kind of ironic. My company here is always on the edge as is my employment.....I've nearly been layed off numerous times and de-moted once in the last few years, however thats the nature of my industry. I knew that going in and can live with that.
However, its been an interesting week.
My friend Tiffany lost her job last thursday at the College Library, Due to budget reductions at the College, her position was eliminated entirely. She was not offered another job.
On Monday, my friend Seth lost his job which was construction, due to lower demand in the housing market, he is no longer needed. He was in the position just shy of 3 years.
Also on Monday, my friend Amy lost her job, she showed up an hour late, aparently her schedule changed and she forgot, so that one was her fault.
On Tuesday a good friend/coworker Lisa lost her nearly 6 figure managment job in continued downsizing at the company. She had been with the company for nearly 7 years.
Today my friend KC lost his job as he was doing data cabling work, basically he was ordered to move 100 miles to Boise as his job was being eliminated and was offered a compariable job in Boise, however the cost of living is higher, so its not AS comparable.
Not counting about a half dozen or so other friends who have been layed off/fired in the past few months either.
Either way, I'm lucky to still have a job. Recent events are making me work harder than normal.

75% of the people I worked with 15 years ago at HP are no longer there. Some from retirement and 'natural' causes, but a good chunk of them due to 'trimming down'.

I've been having a really hard time finding a decent job for over a year now. I've been trying to get an apprenticeship at a machine shop but it seems like nobody wants an inexperienced kid wandering around, even if I work for cheap.
I was "laid off" from my network tech job on campus due to budget cuts, then I spent the summer messing with my grandparents estate so I didn't have time to fool with looking, then I worked at Home Depot (WORST PLACE EVER) and quit because management had their heads you know where, and then I worked at Toys R Us assembling bicycles but they just completely quit giving me hours after x-mas.
Right now all I can get it is 8 hours a week watching a computer lab.
I've had quite a few interviews, turned in tons of applications, but nobody ever seems to call back.
Fricken economy is going to hell in a handbasket...

The south had raw materials and plenty of people to harvest it and to manufacture it into useable good.... except when crunch time came they didn't have any factories with which to make their materials into military goods.
Right now, US is shipping tons of scrap metal overseas since the price of scrap has gone sky-high, we still have other raw material, but a lot of our factories and mom/pop shops are gone... they've been replaced by McDonalds and Wal-Mart.
Anyway, seems like all I can find job-wise is fast food and I just hate the idea of doing it... I don't mind work, but I'd certainly hope that I could find a decent job even remotely related to my field... I graduated Valedictorian and I'm holding a 3.4 GPA working on an engineering degree but that doesn't seem to be helping me much.
What I need to do is get out in the shop on campus, snitch a bunch of scrap aluminum and start making my own car parts or something :P

or in my case you can blame a stupid owner that A) doesnt pay enough attention to what acually going on in the office to see that our production department is wasting more money every year then i would make in a life time and B) is never a good idea no matter how rich you are to tell a bank rep to go F-himself

My dad was laid off a production job at Bombardier (de Haviland / Q400, Global Express airplanes) just last week. Seniority about 1.5 years.
And before that, he was laid off from an automotive urethane seat foam supplier. Seniority about 23+ years but reduced to 11 based on a union technicality (when working between two different departments, seniority could not be combined) that we tried to fight. Their word against ours, unfortunately. He'd still be working there if this wasn't the case.
The going is tough if you work in manufacturing...
