That'* because this is middle school level math. The fact that adults are getting it wrong astounds me.

First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
(9+3)=12

Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
48/2=24
24*12=288

It'* just showing that most users on the internet, to include this forum, aren't that smart.

If the amount of math you know gets you through your day to day life and making money so you can be comfortable, fine. This is middle school level stuff though. The fact that so many adults are getting wrong either means 1) they don't use anything more than basic add/subtract everyday or 2) they were taught wrong in the first place.

Mouse hit it on the head. This type of math is rarely used in real life, add, subtract, multiply, and divide, that'* about it. Very clear set rules. It'* been nearly 30 years sense I was in school using math at this level. Took a while for it to come back. The rules are clear, the answer is 288.

Also, the above formula mouse got right. 11 is the answer, 14 is wrong.

Here, try this one, a bit more jumping around.

5 x 8 + 6 ÷ 6 - 12 x 2

Or this one.

9 + 6 x (8 - 5)

17

5*8 = 40
6/6 = 1
12*2 = 24
40 + 1 - 24 = 17

Or this one.

9 + 6 x (8 - 5)
27

8-5=3
6*3 = 18
9 + 18 = 27

9 + 6 x (8 - 5)
First one
5x8+6÷6-12x2

Second one
9+6x(8-5)
9+6x3
9+18
