There'* another thread here about the 3.1'* and 3.4'*. Bascially, stay away from the 3.4, which I think came on the 96 GTP. The 3.1 is your best bet. They are somewhat reliable, but tend to leak at times.

Why would you want to go to a Grand Prix from a Bonneville? I do agree that the 1994-1996 2 door SE and GTP do look very nice with the 5-spoke wheels, but I wouldn't want one unless it had at least and L36 or L67 swap.

Ive seen the Twin DOHC engine on both ends of the spectrum. I have friends that have the 3.4 in there Lumina'* and both are over 180 K while I have 1 friend who'* 3.4 quit after 74K and another that has alot of problems at 110K. This is an engine that requires alot of maint. if you dont plan on keeping up on it that is not the engine for you. The biggest problem that I know of with it is that it uses a rubber timing belt that can go bad with alot of abuse. Though I couldnt keep up with any of them, my 96 Cutlass with the 3100 was much more reliable. Its tough not to choose the 3.4 though, man that engine can put a hurtin on alot of cars.

Ugh. Don't bash the 3.4TDC if you've never owned one. If you maintain the engine properly and change the timing belt at the right intervals (60k miles), then the 3.4 will NEVER give you any more problems than the 3.1 will. The 3100 is an underpowered 60* econobox and it'* nothing I ever want to own again. I happen to like moving out of my own way, which is something my 3.1 could never do, even when it was running at it'* best. If you don't have a fear of working on an engine (which most pushrod domestic owners do), go ahead and pick up the 3.4. Check the timing belt (the cover comes off with 2 8mm bolts). It should look good, and not have any fraying on either side. If the timing belt looks good, the car idles smooth, and it picks up allright, you should be good to go!
If I find an LQ1/284 combination at the right price, this Bonne is as good as gone.
P.*: Don't bother with ClubGP if you don't own an L36 or an L67. They don't want anything to do with you. Don't DARE mention "LQ1" over there either. http://www.w-body.com/forum
