Talking Hello from the new guy

Hey guys newbie here.
I have a question if anyone knows I have a 96 suburban that has developed an intermittent stalling problem as if it simply shuts off or stops gettiung fuel. I just changed the fuel pump out last year maybe 6,000 miles ago I am wondering if there is a short in the wiring to the fuel pump someplace or if anyone knows of any other oddities that might cause this.
This has otherwise been an exemplary truck and I could not be hap[pier with it.
in fact it is the second 96 I own because of the mileage in this year before the epa got more involved and started screwing things up.

anyways glad to be here will help if i can and just wondered if anyone else has solved this type of problem with these vihicles?
Thanks
John

not being a computer car guy
<----- old school
I had not even thought of the cps that might just be the pain in my @$$ thank you!
aside from this little annoyance and yes as a rule it starts right up after, this has been an exceptional truck. i LOVE the first year vortek motor as it addressed the main issue with the gm motor for decades , breathing right. as a result yu have one of the most dependable ane economical motors going. It did stop both ford and dodge in their tracks and make them rethink their entire lines.
anyways
it did this years ago and got parked for 5 years while I put in my 16 hour days in my work truck after that I replaced the fuel pump and forgot all bout the issue which has not resurfaced for 3 years until now. So I was thinking it could be a fuel pump issue.
the only code I get is, po420 catalyst left bank, which I am fairly certain is a combo of the need for my parts to get here to do a tune up and the 02 sensor being junk. BUT if anyone has other ideas they are always welcome here. I know just enough to know I know nothing.
also thanks for the welcomes guys.

nobody knows everything to start with. thats why these forums are good, there is always someone else who has the same problems. 420 though is normally the cat plugged. the o2 sensors have their own circuit codes and other codes to tell if the sensor is bad.

Hey thanks again yea 420 is supposed to be the catalyst but I had heard that the 02 sensor goes it can fail to read right and that is misinterpreted as a cat failure.
that is just something an old friend of mine told me. I did most of the tune up got the wrong plugs and still waiting on that and the code resurfaces after being cleared but it takes about 40 iles further to show up.? kinda odd also the stalling does seem to be the fuel pump and I am hoping the pump will be here tomorrow. if all goes well should get here around 7:00PM tomorrow. I am kinda thinking of adding an additional ground to the new wiring hrness for the pump just to be sure it is grounded right I read someplace that is one of the causes these pumps tend to fail so often.
ANYWAYS I cant wait to get my truck back on the road. living in the middle of nowhere is great but being stranded there can get a bit nerve racking.

as with any sensor monitor its not always 100 percent right but if the sensor "wears out normally" it starts being slow and there are different codes for that. and if its wiring there are different codes for that as well. i say not always because on gms seems there is a time that it starts going but is not bad enough to set a code. i dont have that much personal experience with that the only times i have had to replace sensors was when i was getting heater circuit errors

interesting I am NOT a sensor guy much
i did find the stalling problem was related to corrosion on the fuse block to the fuel pump relay. i tinkered with it some and found a mechanic who had encountered thesame thing a couple times before so i am the third. uyea me.lol
anyways he tweakeed on it a bit more than i was comfortable with and it has been flawless since (knock on wood)
I am still having mileage issues but i suspect there are a fleet of sensors that are ready to be replaced either due to sitting for years and corroding, not getting proper voltage from the main fuse block, or just being 18 years old.
I did find that my k7n air filter sheds a bit of oil into the intake and that covered the internals of the maf and caused the engine to run a bit lean as it thought it was not getting enough air. I am thinking cts and all new 02 sensors are in my future. OH and i KNOW i need an egr

you can take it out and clean the wire with maf cleaner, just dont go crazy with the filter oil doesnt need much

ok cleaned the maf and air temp sensor, replaced the egr, then got to the 02 sensors,
while three out of four looked almost new even with 200k on them (yea I KNOW I shoulda done em sooner but... if it aint broke dont fix it)anyways, I got to one that had taken substantial damage.
I got hit on my rear passenger door just before a family road trip and the impact fractured the catalyst in one cat changed it and the muffler but when i got the 02 sensor out , a chunk of the catalyst had smashed one downstream 02 to the point it was almost impossible to get out.
anyways I am down in the city and still getting 17 now so I think i got it.
still find it odd that the mileage would drop to 11 and show no codes but...
