Hi! Welcome to the club!
As far as the high beam switch goes, the entire control stalk is one piece, so you have to entirely replace it. NBD because you can find two or three DOZEN at any junkyard.
It'* the same piece on almost all GMs with cruise control from the 90s, even the trucks, so if you find one that looks like yours, it'll fit.You might have to try 2 or 3 to get one that works perfectly, so don't re-assemble the dash completely until you take it out for a test drive.

Welcome to the club! If you aren't already crazy, you will be soon!

You shouldn't have to take the wheel off. As for how to get the column apart, check out a Chiltons manual from your local library, or buy one from NAPA.
