Future New Bonneville Owner
Greetings everyone. I am going to be the owner of a 1998 Bonneville SE with a blown engine. I paid $500 for it. I joined this club because I want to know more about the Pontiac Bonneville. What can I do with it. What type of replacement engine should I purchase? I know that the Boneville uses the the GM 3800 series engine. Any ideas would be appreciated.

That would be an L67
No... haha, the engine that came in your car is the Series 2 NA, better known as the L36. They're fairly common and you can get one for around 600 bucks I think.

It'* actually a pretty easy swap, as everything but a couple sensor wires is already there. But the trans in your car really won't hold up very well to the extra power. The L67 is the supercharged motor and makes enough extra power to neccessitate a heavy-duty version of the transmission. You can get an upgrade kit for INTENSE that will give replace the neccessary parts to convert your trans to the HD, though.
You would also have to swap or reprogram your PCM(powertrain control module)
www.intense-racing.com
lok in the Series II/III section of the INTENSE store, under transaxle.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. The Bonneville SE is green. How much more HP is it between the stock engine in the SE and the engine in the SSEi?

The L36 is rated at 205hp at the crank, L67 is 240hp at the crank. But L67s tend to be underrated. They're both solid motors.
As far as swapping an L67, the transmission may be able to hold it. The SSEi did come with an HD version of the 4T65E that'* in your car, but I believe that only means an upgraded 4th gear clutch, differential, and a couple other parts. People who have done hybrid L36 bottom ends with L67 top ends have sometimes used the regular 4T60E or 4T65E, and as long as you aren't beating the hell out of your car every day, you should be able to get away with it for a while. Especially bad would be one-wheel burnouts or trying to screech the tires going around a corner. Much of it would depend on the mileage and wear that'* already on the transmission.
There are mixed opinions on this topic, so some people may chime in here and advise you against mating an L67 with a 4T65E. I'm only saying that some people have done it, and it can be done with success. Just know what you're getting into if you try it.
