When I gutted out my airbox, I didn't notice any change in fuel mileage. It did, however, make the throttle response a tiny bit quicker. Bear in mind that Ms. Daisy may not like her front end sounding like a small vacuum.
A rusted-through muffler may make some weird sounds, but shouldn't affect your mileage unless someone pranked you with a potato in your tailpipe.

oh and by the way, skip gutting the airbox. spend <$20 at home depot on some PVC, and <$30 at an auto parts store on a cone filter (more if you want k&n) for a FWI, and call it a day:

ive got 2 more questions for you though. one what did you do with the pcm after taking out the airbox? and 2 how did you clean your engine compartment? i really dont want to flood my electronics. i know everything has weatherpak connectors but im still paranoid, so ive left it all dusty haha.

the taillights, turn signals, and side markers were all done with VHT nite shades followed by duplicolor clear. then wet sanding and polish/wax. i also painted the chrome trim around the taillights with krylon fusion.
the stock speakers surprised me too, i have 2 12'* with 2 300 watt amps and the stock speakers can still keep up at any volume.
i zip-tied the pcm down right where the airbox normally would be, but you could go as far as getting a pcm tray from a blazer or fabricating something of your own. zip-ties are ok though, thats how mine has been for almost 3 years now.
for cleaning the engine compartment i cover my cone filter with a plastic bag, and then spray the rest down with simple green or any kind of degreaser really good and let it sit for about 5 minutes. then spray everything off and repeat on anything that didnt come off with scrubbing if you have to. you dont have to be too worried about getting anything wet besides the filter, what ive always found is that sometimes a little water will amplify any underlying problems you might be having with certain parts (coils in particular). after youre done hosing the degreaser off, start the engine and let it run for 5-10 minutes to let it warm up a bit and dry most of the water off.

not that ill have the money for it soon, but if you know off hand what size wheels and tires do you have and are there any rub issues? these crappy rims have got to go. id even take my dads haha. they look about the same but with bigger spokes and a smooth hubcap.
i think thats it as far as questions about my car.
did you run into the issue of having to trim the innards of your dash to fit a aftermarket stereo? i had to trim a ton of plastic to just make it fit with the faceplate protruding. and as a result i had to paint the stereo cage black because the hole cut in the dashboard wasnt big enough to fit the plastic trim piece around the stereo. you cant tell unless you look really close but its one of those things that makes you feel like you did a half assed job lol.
