Your car has a 195, but the fans dont turn on until over 200. So changing stats wont do much in the city. I don't suggest a 160 unless you chnage the tune. You can do a 180 with no problems.

If you want to have your car stay cooler, have someone tune your PCM to have the fans kick on at a lower temperature, or get an auxiliary fan installed that stays on all the time.

Your thermostat is a 195. Your fans aren't supposed to kick in till around 220 or 225, I forget which, which is why it never goes above that point. Getting a lower temperature t-stat in there will not help anything, just have your engine running cooler while cruising or moving faster.

Different Dealer Techs have told me, so I assume it'* valid; Several PCM settings/parameters are set to make the car run at 200. That is the design and altering one just makes others work harder trying to make it so. Unless you going heavy mod, IMO, leave it alone. It was made to run @ 200 and shouldn't be a problem if there aren't other ones present. (Old leaking seals, clogged radiator, etc.)

Actually this was when i had older models with the 3800 (85 Regency, 90 LeSabre, 92 Park Avenue) that did they same as what you describe, and I took then in trying to find a "fix". They told me what I stated (different times) and that if it isn't overheating, leave it be. I saw the 195-220 swing in the summer and towing a little utility trailer but none ever blew a cork. I did use the Park Ave quite a bit for chores with the trailer and did add a manual switch to the fans just to make myself feel better.

The stock 195F stat and fan settings of low speed at 216F, high speed at 228F are done to keep the motor running a bit hotter as it is more "efficient" at higher temps. Changing out the T stat like mentioned is worthwhile, but only helps with airflow.
If you'd like a reprogrammed pcm, I have your year unlocked in HPT and could do it cheap. Only thing is I'd either need your pcm or another 97 pcm and your vin #.
